this summer, there will again be a summer school on Ecological-Economic Modelling for Biodiversity Conservation. Advances in Energy Studies - Towards a holistic approach based on science and humanity This series of workshops – now at its 6th edition - aims at bringing together experts from different disciplines for the discussion of the latest results in research regarding energy technologies, energy systems and their political, social and economical impacts. We aim at sharpening the scientific focus and building a critical mass and collaborative network among scientists researching energy issues. We will discuss the question of future energy scenarios and their implications in a circle of open minded people representing different approaches in order to gain new momentum in these years as societal attention once again shifts toward policy debates and decisions concerning sustainable use of energy and resources and their relationship to the economics of humanity and the future of the plant as a convenient habitat. Main topics will be:
More workshop themes will be included if proposed by participants or if appropriate because oft the papers submitted. The organisers of the workshop will do their best to concentrate the discussion on needs and energy services for medium and long term developments within the framework of a sustainable regional scale economic and social development. The workshop will be a platform for those who take the energy issue as a serious challenge to our and the next generations and we are aware that a great number of scenarios have to be discussed. This is why we invite acknowledged experts for presentation of papers but also anyone who is interested to contribute to the workshops. The event will be complemented with excursions to installation of energy efficiency and renewable energy in the region in order to learn from the day-to-day business. The workshop is substantially sponsored by the Austrian Ministry for Transport, Innovation and Technology. IASC 2008: Governing shared resources: connecting local experience
to global challenges The IASC 2008 global conference will take place in Cheltenham , England . The conference will be hosted by the University of Gloucestershire , with logistical support to be provided by the University's Countryside and Community Research Unit (CCRU). The emphasis of the conference is the exchange of knowledge on shared resources or ‘commons’: between developing and developed world, between practitioners and researchers, and between old and ‘new’ commons. The overarching theme of governing shared resources aims to encourage discussion on new ways of using, managing, protecting and creating what many understand as ‘commons’. The themes recognise the wide variety of understanding over the term ‘commons’ and the need to link practical experience at the local level with larger global commons issues. School in Resource and Environmental Economics: Space in Unified Models
of Economy and Ecology Deadline for application: February 1st, 2008 The European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (EAERE), the Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei (FEEM) and the Venice International University (VIU) are pleased to announce their annual European Summer School in Resource and Environmental Economics for postgraduate students. The 2008 Summer School will take place from the 6th to the 12th of July, at the VIU campus on the Island of San Servolo, in Venice, located just in front of St. Mark?s Square. The theme of this Summer School is Space in Unified Models of Economy and Ecology. The purpose of this Summer School is to review and present methods of modeling spatial problems in ecological economics, and to show how these methods can be used in environmental and resource management. In this context the Summer Schools is expected to cover issues associated with: - the use of diffusion processes to model evolution in time and space; - the implications of "the Turing mechanism" for diffusive instability, and the emergence of steady state spatial patterns; - the control of diffusion processes in ecological/economic models which evolve in time and space; - applications of spatial methods to environmental and resource management and regulation problems, where space is important as in cases of patchy environments, species movements, pollution diffusion. These problems could include harvesting of renewable resources, management of pollution diffused in space, bioinvasions, elements of spatial econometrics and GIS. For further information on application and funding please access the Summer School Website at www.feem.it/ess III AERNA Conference Spanish-Portuguese Association

THE FIRST INTERNATIONAL SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE ON "ECONOMIC DEGROWTH FOR SOCIAL EQUITY AND ECOLOGICAL SUSTAINABILITY", in Paris on April 18-19, has established a foundation for international scientific cooperation. The encounter was widely viewed as a great success, with 140 researchers from 30 countries both from the industrialised west and the south. Prestigious institutions in the realms of economics, social sciences and environmental studies were represented. Economic growth is being increasingly called into question. Public movements are developing in France and Italy and elsewhere promoting sustainable, fair, convivial "degrowth". The so-called "decoupling" of ecological and social degradation and economic growth appears insufficient after years of major eco-efficiency improvements. This opens a new field of research: What are the social and institutional conditions required for a fair and sustainable economic degrowth process? What would be the scenarios for degrowth...? Among the themes discussed were: new indicators, the rebound effect, perspectives from the south, degrowth versus steady state, degrowth of consumption, degrowth of production, relocalization, redistribution of wealth, status of the economic players, social change and change of economic institution; all within the framework of how to make degrowth a contributor to equity, sustainability and improved quality of live. Various round table and forums and workshops took place to develop solutions and common understanding on the issues involved. Thus, "degrowth" has become an international concept and this word has been established as the translation of the original "décroissance" and "decrescita". Other translations of the term are emerging in numerous languages. This encounter has opened the door to new solutions and a true change of paradigm in the context of today's economic, social and environmental crises around the world.
