PAGES (Past Global Changes; www.pages-igbp.org) is an international program that coordinates
and promotes research on past changes of climate and the environment.
PAGES is seeking a Project and Communications Officer for its International Project Office in Bern, Switzerland to take over project organization
and coordination, as well as some science communication and office management.
This is an administrative position. It is searched for a motivated individual with a background in project management and/or science communication,
good communication and organizational skills, and a general appreciation for climatic and environmental science. Native speaker level of written and
spoken English is required, German an advantage.
Main duties include:

Senior researcher position
The Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei (FEEM), an Italian research institute that carries out research on sustainable development, encourages to submit
applications for a research position within the framework of the ICARUS project. ICARUS - Innovation for Climate chAnge mitigation: a study of
energy R&d, its Uncertain effectiveness and Spillovers - is a ERC Starting Independent Researcher Grants (ERC Starting Grants) funded by the European
Commission within the 7th Framework Programme. The project will start in January 2010 and it is three years long. The project focuses broadly on
understanding drivers and mechanisms of innovation in carbon free technologies.
The successful candidate will join the ICARUS group and work in frontier research on the empirical analysis of patent data, expert elicitation of
uncertain successful of R&D programs and modelling of endogenous technical change in the energy sector. An outline of the modelling tool is available at

The candidate is expected to have a good general background in applied and theoretical economics, with previous experience in applied modelling work.
Candidates must have a Ph.D. or be near its completion. The Ph.D should be preferably in economics; Ph.Ds in energy engineering/mathematics coupled with
a solid economic background are also accepted. Experience in modelling, and proficiency in GAMS or econometric software are important requisites.
Previous work on innovation and its dynamics on other sectors is also positively welcomed.
The selected candidate will interact with researchers of different nationalities, and will write and present scientific papers. An excellent command of
written and spoken English is essential for this position.

Initiative for the Development of Scientific and Economic Excellence (LOEWE). The mission of the Centre is to carry out internationally outstanding
research on the interactions of biodiversity and climate change at the organism level. The Project Area F „Knowledge Transfer and Social-Ecological
Aspects of Climate-Induced Changed in Biodiversity” invites applications for a
Postdoctoral Researcher Position - "Ecosystem Services – Concepts and Application"
The position is to develop a research framework for assessment and valuation of biodiversity and associated ecosystem services in the context of climate
change. The research should adapt and develop existing concepts, methodological approaches and applications further. The applicability of the framework has
to be evaluated for existing and upcoming research projects within BiK-F. Support of reporting and applications for funds is part of the duties.

Environmental economist at the Joint Nature Conservation Committee
The Joint Nature Conservation Committee (JNCC) is seeking an environmental economist to lead the development of the use of socio-economic information
in their marine advisory work, particularly in support of their Marine Protected Areas Programme. It is an exciting opportunity to pioneer the use
of economics into delivery of marine nature conservation policy by working closely with other economists in the UK Governments and their Agencies,
and more widely with organisations in the public and private sectors. Candidates will need a high level of understanding of technical issues relating

PhD position in ecological-economic modelling
The Department of Ecological Modelling (OESA) at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research - UFZ, Leipzig (Germany) is inviting applications for a
PhD position in ecological-economic modelling (f/m) to commence at the earliest possible date. The work will be embedded in a research project aiming
to model the influence of various policy instruments and markets on land use decisions and to assess the resulting regional land use patterns in terms
of their impacts on crop yield, biodiversity, carbon balance, and costs (using input from other models). Special focus will be on instruments governing
land use decisions in connection with biomass production for energy. Final goal will be to identify an appropriate policy mix for mitigating land use
conflicts and harmonizing the demand for energy and food with other societal goals such as climate protection, biodiversity conservation and regional value
addition.
Requirements:
- University degree (Diploma, MSc, or equivalent) in applied systems sciences, economics, biology, physics, or a related discipline;
- Experience with spatial dynamic modelling in ecology or regional economics, ideally ecological-economic or agent-based modelling;
- Experience with simulation-based approaches and a modern programming language (e.g. Delphi, C++ Builder, Java) are required; good
mathematical skills are beneficial;
- Interest in interdisciplinary work on ecological-economic aspects of land use change;
- Good skills in English (speaking and writing);
Conditions:
The candidate will be recruited for three years under employment contract with the UFZ. Salary will be according to the appropriate civil service

Governance of Clean Development Visiting Fellowship - Call for Applications
The ESRC-funded Governance of Clean Development (GCD) Project is inviting applications for the first of its visiting fellowships, offering the opportunity
for a practitioner or academic to work alongside the GCD team at the University of East Anglia on a topic relating to governance of clean development.
What is included in the fellowship?
The selected candidate will be based at the University of East Anglia (UEA) for a period of 4 - 6 weeks between March and June 2010. The candidate
will work closely with the GCD team to produce an agreed output on a theme relevant to the research programme on clean development. This will include
opportunities for meetings with key actors in clean energy governance in London and at the Tyndall Centre, conference participation and exchange of
ideas with senior academics in the School of International Development and other schools at UEA. The fellowship includes international and UK travel
costs, visa, insurance, accommodation in UK and a small per diem. Salary replacement costs are not covered.
Expected outputs: The Visiting Fellow will be expected to engage with the GCD team and other members of the department, present a seminar at the
School of International Development and prepare a paper for the GCD Working Paper Series.
Who should apply?
The visiting fellowship scheme is open to academics and practitioners working on topics relating to the governance of clean energy. Candidates from India,
Argentina and South Africa are particularly encouraged to apply (since these are the countries where we are doing most of our field work), but we are

Job description:
This position is being re-advertised. If you have applied previously, please do not re-apply. The postholder will work from the Rainforest
Foundation's London office, as part of the Programmes team, co-ordinating the Rainforest Foundation's programme in Peru. S/he will be
responsible to the Programme Manager and will work closely with our local project partner organisations in Peru. S/he will also be
responsible for oversight of other programmes in the Amazon-Andean sub-region ((currently one small project in Colombia) and, time allowing,
for developing new project opportunities in Peru or the wider sub-region. S/he will be expected to spend around 15 weeks of the year in the region.
The overall goals of the Rainforest Foundation's work in rainforest countries are:
- To ensure that the processes governing forest control and use are transparent and explicitly include forest dependent communities as key decision-makers;
- To ensure that the area of thriving forest has been maintained or increased from current levels and that activities which destroy or degrade forests, such as industrial logging, have decreased from current levels;
- To enable forest dependent communities to strengthen, understand, articulate and exercise their rights;
- To ensure that forest peoples can articulate and fulfill their own needs, including sustainable livelihoods and access to basic services such as education.
The postholder will have particular responsibility for one major programme: "Protecting Rainforest in the Selva Central Region of Peru". This will involve
working with partners in Peru, mainly indigenous organisations, and also with a major corporate donor in the UK and the Rainforest Foundation's fundraising
and communications staff in order to meet the communication needs of UK supporters.
Specific Responsibilities
- Manage the "Protecting Rainforest in the Selva Central Region of Peru" project and any other projects ensuring proper project implementation and compliance with any donor requirements;
- Manage regular communications with the major donor of the project "Protecting Rainforest in the Selva Central Region of Peru".
- Assist in the identification and development of new field projects which have the potential to support the Rainforest Foundation's strategy in Peru and other countries in the Andean Amazon sub-region (with the exception of Brazil);
- Assist in the preparation of funding proposals relevant for the development of the Andean Amazon projects and policy programme, particularly in Peru;
- Deliver and coordinate capacity strengthening and support through mentoring and training to staff of local project partner organisations for the "Protecting Rainforest in the Selva Central Region of Peru" project and for any other projects in the Andean Amazon region, particularly in Peru;
- Support partner organisations to develop, implement, monitor and evaluate projects, with particular emphasis on participatory approaches;
- Develop and implement a realistic campaign and advocacy strategy necessary to ensure the effectiveness of the "Protecting Rainforest in the Selva Central Region of Peru" project, and more widely on the protection of forests and forest peoples rights in Peru, in consultation with the partners, the Executive Director and other members of the Programmes team;
- Monitor relevant international developments, particularly those effecting the project areas, and more widely concerning forest policy, indigenous rights and development co-operation;
- Prepare to publications standard, and support the production of, project and campaign materials and publications, including leaflets, briefings, reports and internet material, in consultation with the Director;
- Develop and conduct relevant media outreach in consultation with the Programmes team and the Press and Media Officer;
- Represent the organisation in relevant local, national and international fora, on relevant project and policy issues, in consultation with the Programme Manager and Executive Director;
- Supervise the work of consultants, researchers and volunteers as appropriate;
- Perform other tasks as may from time to time be requested by the Programme Manager or Executive Director.

Essential
- At least three years' experience of managing projects with local partners in a developing country.

The PhD Programme is organised in two streams:
- Dynamic Climatology at CMCC in Bologna
- Climate change impact and management, at the Department of Economics of the Ca' Foscari University in Venice
For the academic year 2009/2010 (25th cycle of Italian PhD Programmes) the Euro-Mediterranean Centre for Climate Change offers three studentships,
others may be provided by other institutions or research projects.
The Call for Applications will be opened around the 15th of May and the deadline will be set at mid June.
In order to apply, students are required to hold an Italian "laurea magistrale" or a university degree equivalent of a MSc. Foreign applicants shall
provide full documentation of their university studies, including course profiles. Knowledge of the English language is a necessary prerequisite,
since all the courses will be given in English. Applicants will be required to submit a research proposal, together with the CV and any other relevant

Senior Scientist/Post-Doc at the Professorship of Ecological Services (PES), University of Bayreuth
The candidate should develop probabilistic models of land use and ecosystem services in regional human-environment systems and/or models of the ecosystem
impact of global land use flows hidden in traded goods. Strong knowledge in land use/ecosystem models with GIS, modeling environments like Matlab and
interest in applying Bayesian Networks is expected. Since the work will be interdisciplinary, candidates holding a PhD in natural sciences or social
sciences/ economics are invited to apply.
The goal of the Professorship of Ecological Services (PES) is to establish a research and teaching program in order to understand the supply and
demand for ecosystem services given global change scenarios and to develop respective decision support tools. Ongoing projects running in Costa Rica,
South Korea, Switzerland and the European Union offer the opportunity to apply the models in case studies. The development of new research proposals and
supervision of PhD students is expected.
The teaching is 2.5 hours per week and will be on modeling land use change and ecosystem services in coupled human-environment systems primarily
in the Master Global Change Ecology at the University Bayreuth.

The Institute for the Environment and Regional Development at the Vienna University of Economics and Business invites applications for two assistant professor positions (fixed-term for 6 years) to begin in
the autumn of 2009. We seek candidates with research and teaching interest in ecological economics, and specifically in one or more of the following
fields: analysis of complex socio-ecological systems, sustainable behaviours (behavioural economics, neuroeconomics, social psychology) and environmental
governance (institutional economics, political science). The working language is English. Faculty responsibilities include research and publication and
teaching and advising students. Candidates should hold a doctoral degree in economics, psychology, political science, environmental science or computer

Full professor in Environmental Spatial Analysis and Head of Department
The Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) is an international institute that conducts world-class multidisciplinary research and teaching in
environmental studies across the natural and social sciences (www.vu.nl/ivm). The institute employs about 130 people and is well-embedded in national
and international academic networks. In addition to core funding, a large part of IVM's budget is obtained from research grants and contract research.
The Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) was established at the VU University in 1971 and was integrated within the Faculty of Earth and Life
Sciences (FALW) in 2002.
The Spatial Analysis and Policy (SPACE) department is one of four departments at IVM, conducting research in environmental spatial analysis, with a
special focus on land use, land-water interactions, climate change, and risk management, applying a range of methods, including remote sensing and GIS
techniques. The department comprises 20 researchers and technicians, including geographers, earth scientists, ecologists and economists.
The new Professor in Environmental Spatial Analysis will focus on spatial aspects of the interaction between land use, hydrological, ecological and
social systems. In particular the chair will seek to integrate theory, method and observational data in understanding dynamics and change at different
scales of these systems, with the objective of contributing to more sustainable solutions.

Job Opportunities in Transdisciplinary Social-Ecological Fisheries Science
The Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology and Inland Fisheries (IGB) (www.igb-berlin.de)
is a member of the Forschungsverbund Berlin e.V. (FVB). The FVB manages 8 large research institutes that have close links to all three universities
in the German capital.
Within the Department of Biology and Ecology of Fishes at IGB we are seeking two new Post-Docs and two new PhD students to form a new young research
group in transdisciplinary fisheries science. The overall research theme is to explore the social-ecology of stocking in inland recreational fisheries.
Positions will be filled pending final approval of a provisionally funded young researcher grant submitted to the Program for Social-Ecological

Senior Professor for the International Chair in "Generating Eco-innovation"
Five major corporate groups Alstom, GDF-SUEZ, Italcementi, SAUR et SNCF have linked together with the founding establishments of the PRES UniverSud
Paris (a federation of research and higher education institutions in the Île de France region of France) to create an International Chair in
"Generating Eco-innovation".
The Chair will be an international pole of excellence for teaching and training, R&D and entrepreneurship aiming to facilitate eco-innovations at
all points along the life cycle, from the emergence of an idea to its commercialisation in the market. The official launching of the Chair took place
on December 3rd 2008 in the Castle of Versailles, France.
The Chair holder will be responsible for the direction of a Masters level teaching programme (of about 25 students per year), for a doctoral programme
(including supervision of selected doctoral students), and for initiating research in the management of eco-innovation. She or he will pilot cooperative
research projects engaging private sector companies and public sector research centres associated with the Chair, with an interdisciplinary perspective
covering the full life cycle of eco-innovation, from initial concepts to commercialisation. This post is intended for an established professor or a
senior researcher who has proven excellence in scientific activities and teaching in the field of innovation management.
